 Description:

This workshop will be delivered by Liz Riley and supported by Lynn Comley.

You will spend the day in the magnificent Richardson Conservatory within the award-winning Scampston Walled Garden. This workshop gives participants all the basic information and skills to learn the technique of Nuno felting, you will create a beautifully colourful medium sized silk and wool scarf.

Nuno felting is a fabric felting technique developed by Polly Stirling, a fibre artist from New South Wales, Australia, around 1992. The name is derived from the Japanese word, ‘Nuno’ meaning cloth. This method of felting is where wool or fibre is embedded or entangled with and through open weave fabric such as silk. The method uses soap, warm water and agitation to tangle fibres and fabrics together to create felt cloth. In approximately 5 ½ hours you will explore making a colourful scarf, you will be guided through choosing colours and textures and the wet felting process.

Felt is surprisingly strong and no two pieces will ever be the same, this is the time to embrace your creativity and add your personal mark.

There will be a short 30 minute break for lunch, in order to maximise teaching time. After the workshop you will also be able to visit the surrounding gardens which close at 5pm.

You do not need any prior experience and you will be provided with all the necessary materials and equipment to use on the day.

Tutors:

Liz Riley is an artisan felt maker with a love of colour and texture. Focusing on traditional feltmaking techniques, her work combines art with a love for making wearable, useable items. Whilst embracing the dexterity of working with fibre, she finds transforming a sheep’s fleece into fabric endlessly fascinating.

With a love for making, her inspiration and motivation is defined by strong colour combinations and colour blends. Using hand dyed wool, silks and hand spun yarns allows her to add fine detail to her pieces, which is characteristic of artisan felted work. www.everythingfelt.co.uk.

Lynn Comley will be supporting the workshop throughout the day. Lynn is a contemporary felt maker perhaps best known as UpandDownDale in the felt making world; creating wet felted textile art, embellished with free motion machine embroidery, hand stitch or both! Within her work she uses a combination of natural materials that include wool, silk and linen.

Living by the sea and surrounded by the North York Moors National Park, Lynn’s artistic focus is on the natural minutia of her surroundings. She enjoys engaging with the delicate patterns and the intricacies of nature, focusing more recently on moss, lichen and limpets but frequently returns to her original inspiration of landscapes, seascapes and hedgerow flora.
