First Felt 2026…
We’re nearly two weeks into a new year! It’s always a good time to reflect on the year gone by and a new year coming in.
Would I say 2025 was easy, probably not! Have I enjoyed it… Yes, Yes, Yes.
January is the perfect time to reflect, to those things in 2025 I tried but let’s say didn’t quite work and to those sometimes less planned amazing successes. An opportunity to look back at how my work has developed, what I like, what I don’t and be able to devote time to simply explore ideas and materials that have been living in my mind, shouting to get out, without any time pressures.
Over the years I have learnt patience in the creativity process. My first felt of 2026 includes elements that I enjoy with new techniques to explore.
So, time to reflect on what’s important to me… Basically, I like fine, precise and well finished felt work and I consistently work at improving my technique to get better results in this regard, this is where I think patience in the creative process is key. Learn from the mistakes so to speak.
Gathering colour, I make sure I walk everyday, having a little Fergus dog helps.
It’s not just about the walking though it’s also about gathering a scrapbook of colour, the images live in albums and in my mind until they need to come to life. I refer to these regularly, often just sitting and scrolling through my directory of photo’s.
The intensity of colour in these two images immediately struck me as a perfect colour combination.
So, coming back to my first felts of 2026.
I have been working on bringing colours to life in some bold silk painting, combining my love for precise shapes (circles, squares, lines) and patterns to create abstract compositions, focusing on form, colour and spatial relationships.
My intention… some of these silk pieces will be incorporated into pre-felts, others into nuno felted silk panels for inclusion in projects. Like my photo stash I like to have a material stash at hand too.
