Description:
You will spend the day in the magnificent Richardson Conservatory within the award-winning Scampston Hall Walled Garden. This workshop gives participants all the basic information and skills to learn the technique of wet felting pictures. Create your very own woodland artwork from wool fibres, silks, nepps, yarns and much more. You will learn how to lay out wool fleece, then how to build up layers of other fibres to add texture and detail to your work, finally we work through the wet felting process.
Bring along your own woodland inspirational photograph or you are very welcome to use a selection of images that will be provided on the day.
Felt is surprisingly strong and no two pieces will ever be the same, this is the time to embrace your creativity and add your personal mark. This method of felting uses soap, warm water and agitation to tangle fibres together to create felt. In approximately 6 hours you will explore making your own artwork, you will be guided through choosing colours and textures and the wet felting process.
There will be a short 30 minute break for lunch, in order to maximise teaching time. After the workshop you will also be able to visit the surrounding gardens which close at 5pm.
You do not need any prior experience and you will be provided with all the necessary materials and equipment to use on the day.
Tutors:
Liz Riley is designer feltmaker with a love of colour and texture. Focusing on traditional feltmaking techniques, her work combines art with a love for making wearable, useable items. Whilst embracing the dexterity of working with fibre, she finds transforming a sheep’s fleece into fabric endlessly fascinating.
With a love for making, her inspiration and motivation is defined by strong colour combinations and colour blends. Using hand dyed wool, silks and hand spun yarns allows her to add fine detail to her pieces, which is characteristic of artisan felted work.
What’s included:
All materials, equipment and tuition to support and guide you through the process of wet felting artwork using traditional hand rolling techniques. You will be guided through choosing colours and textures and then the wet felting process to create an original woodland scene.
You will take away the work you produce on the day plus PDF notes for reference later.
Complementary tea, coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the day and the workshop includes free access to the beautiful Walled Garden during the day, which closes at 5pm.
